Senator Soucek is at it again…

img-Commitment-2012-R-NC-District-45-Dan-Soucek

Well, N.C. State Senator Dan Soucek is trying once again to eliminate the Boone area ETJ (extra-territorial jurisdiction), which among other things protects residents in areas adjacent to Boone-proper from wholesale development. His bill, S. 865 (a.k.a. Town of Boone/Extraterritorial Jurisdiction) quietly passed the NC senate last week, and is now in the House Committee on Government.

Many residents who live in Boone’s ETJ areas have spoken out in favor of these protections — the folks that this bill would help the most are developers who want easier access to build things like asphalt plants right next to residential homes.

Please send a message to ALL representatives on this list asking them to reject this bill in committee and to let Boone make its own decisions about how the ETJ should be handled.

And send a message to Senator Soucek if you’d like, reminding him that since he’s against Big Government interfering with our lives, he shouldn’t be using his position on state government to pass bills which should instead be the jurisdiction of the Town of Boone.

SAMPLE LANGUAGE:

Dear NC Representatives (or INDIVIDUAL REP NAME),

I am writing today as a resident of Boone, N.C., asking you to throw out a bill created by Sen. Dan Soucek and passed by the N.C. State Senate last week that would abolish the Boone extra territorial jurisdiction (ETJ). This bill, Town of Boone/Extraterritorial Jurisdiction (S. 865), would remove important protections for the residents who live in the town’s ETJ.

It makes no sense to single out this one town to remove these protections set so many years ago, especially when so many residents within our ETJ have expressed appreciation for the protections the designation provides to their homes from adjacent industrial development such as asphalt plants.

Lastly, this issue is a local issue, and I feel strongly should be addressed by our local government and by local citizens. I respectfully ask that you do not hear this bill or move it out of  committee.

Sincerely,

  1. THe town of Boone and its citizens should make the decision about EJT. It is curious that this bill pertains only to our town and not Blowing Rock or other towns in you represent in the legislature. It is clearly a vendetta.
